Hurricane Isaias set to make landfall on the Gulf Coast late tonightdeveloping

Hurricane Isaias, a Category 2 storm near major-hurricane strength, is forecast to make landfall late Friday or early Saturday on the northern Gulf Coast, near the Alabama-Florida line around Pensacola. Forecasters warn of 5 to 7 feet of storm surge from the Mississippi coast to the western Florida Panhandle. Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency, with mandatory evacuations on Dauphin Island and in parts of Baldwin County, Alabama, and Okaloosa County, Florida. It is the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, the latest first hurricane on record.

South African judge Navi Pillay wins the 2026 Nobel Peace Prizeconfirmed

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay, a South African jurist and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights who has served as a judge at the International Criminal Court. The committee said she was instrumental in ensuring war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted, and called her "one of the great defenders of international legal principles in our time." She also headed the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, about $1.2 million. President Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the prize.

Ossoff and Collins clash in Georgia's first Senate debateconfirmed

Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff and Republican Rep. Mike Collins met Thursday night in their first televised debate, hosted by Atlanta News First and Gray Media. They clashed over tariffs, inflation, Medicaid and health care, the Iran war, immigration and voter ID. A second debate is set for Tuesday. Early in-person voting in Georgia starts Oct. 13, and the election is Nov. 3.

Ossoff saysPresident Trump's tariffs and the Medicaid cuts Collins voted for are raising costs for Georgia families, and he would repeal both. He called the Iran war a disaster.
Collins saysInflation came from the Biden administration and green energy policies, health costs rose because of the Affordable Care Act, and the president has the right to keep Iran's leaders from getting a nuclear weapon.

10-year Treasury yield touches 5.35% as stock futures reboundconfirmed

The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.35% on Thursday before easing to 5.23%, with bond yields at their highest levels in years, AP reports. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Nasdaq 1.3% on Thursday as tech stocks slid. Early Friday, U.S. stock futures were higher as tech shares recovered, and Brent crude was down about 1% near $103 a barrel.
