Lula wins a fourth term in Brazil; Flávio Bolsonaro rejects the resultdeveloping

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday's presidential runoff with 51.8% of the vote to 48.2% for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes with all ballots counted, according to Brazil's electoral court. Bolsonaro said it is "impossible to acknowledge the result" and called for the election to be annulled, objecting to a Supreme Court justice's order, issued three minutes before closing, to keep polls open two more hours; both candidates had asked for extensions. Lula's new term begins January 5, 2027.

Lula saysIn his victory speech he said Brazil "will not accept being anyone's backyard"; during the campaign he argued a Bolsonaro government would hand sovereignty to the U.S.
Flávio Bolsonaro saysThe late extension was a "dirty trick" that "changed the rules in the middle of the game"; he noted the justice who ordered it is Lula's former lawyer, and he wants the election annulled.

Trump rallies in Michigan for Mike Rogers, attacks Democrat Abdul El-Sayedconfirmed

President Trump held a rally Sunday at McMorran Place in Port Huron, Michigan, backing Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers and governor nominee John James. He said, "I'm here to keep a jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator," about Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. El-Sayed told a town hall he would "absolutely" disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. Former President Obama rallied for El-Sayed in Detroit on Saturday. The seat is open because Sen. Gary Peters is retiring; Election Day is November 3.

Republicans sayTrump said El-Sayed would gain access to "our nation's most closely guarded national security secrets" and called Rogers "one of the most respected men in Washington"; Rogers promised more affordable housing and to bring back 200,000 jobs.
Democrats sayEl-Sayed has said he "absolutely" disavows the Muslim Brotherhood and has dismissed anti-Muslim rhetoric as "distractions"; Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Rogers and James are "ready to rubber stamp Trump's toxic agenda."
