Trending today: Karl Bushby's 28-year walk, Everton's win at Newcastle and the white Christmas forecast
British adventurer Karl Bushby finishes a 28-year walk around the world, Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 for the second time in five days, and the Old Farmer's Almanac releases its 2026 white Christmas forecast.
British adventurer and former paratrooper Karl Bushby arrived at his mother's home in Hull, England, on Monday, Nov. 2, after a city hall welcome, finishing a walk he began in Punta Arenas, Chile, on Nov. 1, 1998, at age 29. AP reports he covered about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) across four continents and 30 countries, avoiding boats and planes and swimming the Caspian Sea and the English Channel. He had expected the trip to take 12 years; Al Jazeera reports visa and funding problems stretched it out.
Thierno Barry scored four minutes after half-time, tapping in after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek parried a Tyrique George shot, as Everton won 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday. It came five days after Everton knocked Newcastle out of the League Cup 3-1. AFP reports Newcastle have lost four of their last five matches in all competitions, fans booed at half-time and full time, and manager Matthias Jaissle is under mounting scrutiny.
The Old Farmer's Almanac's 2026 white Christmas forecast says the Northeast, the Intermountain region and Alaska are likeliest to see one, with a chance in the Pacific Northwest, High Plains, Lower Lakes and Ohio Valley. It does not expect a white Christmas in the Atlantic Corridor, including the New York City area, the Southeast, Florida, the Deep South, the Upper Midwest, the Heartland, Texas-Oklahoma, the Desert Southwest, the Pacific Southwest or Hawaii. The National Weather Service defines a white Christmas as at least 1 inch of snow on the ground at 7 a.m. Christmas morning. Newsweek notes long-range outlooks can change as December approaches.
