When polls close tonight, Minnesota's first woman governor, Russia strikes Ukraine
When polls close and when to expect midterm results, Minnesota set to elect its first woman governor, Russia's overnight strikes on Ukraine's power grid, AMD's big forecast, and the Giants' extension for Greg Newsome.
Polls start closing at 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) in parts of Indiana and Kentucky and the last close at 1 a.m. ET (midnight CT) in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, according to AP. Big batches close at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET; Minnesota closes at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CT). Some states count slowly: in 2024, about 38% of California's vote wasn't counted on election night, and California counts mail ballots postmarked by Election Day if they arrive by Nov. 10. Results are partial until races are called.
Minnesota is almost certain to elect its first woman governor as DFL nominee Amy Klobuchar, a U.S. senator, faces Republican Lisa Demuth, the Minnesota House speaker; Green Party candidate Steven Young is also running. Gov. Tim Walz ended his campaign for a third term earlier this year. Polls close at 8 p.m. CT, and anyone in line by 8 p.m. can still vote.
Klobuchar's campaign saysIts priorities are lowering health care and housing costs, rooting out fraud, government accountability, workforce preparation and access to education and health care.
Demuth's campaign saysIts priorities are fighting fraud, lowering taxes, investing in public safety and speeding business development with shorter permitting timelines.
Russia launched 289 drones and 17 ballistic missiles at Ukraine overnight, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, targeting power generation and substations and hitting a hospital in Kharkiv, where dozens of people were injured. Ukraine saysZelenskyy called it a "complex, massive attack" aimed mainly at energy and said Russia directly struck a city clinical hospital in Kharkiv.
Russia saysIts defense ministry said it targeted energy facilities that it says supply power to Ukraine's army and military factories.
