Supreme Court opens its term with a climate lawsuit case
The Supreme Court opens its new term Monday with Suncor Energy v. Boulder County, which asks whether local governments can sue energy companies in state court over climate-related damages. Justice Samuel Alito has recused himself, so eight justices will hear the case; a 4-4 tie would leave in place the Colorado ruling allowing Boulder's suit to go forward.

How each side sees it
Boulder County saysIt seeks past and future costs of repairs, emergency services and property damage, not regulation of emissions, and says states can address harms within their own borders.
Suncor, Exxon Mobil and the Trump administration sayClimate is a global issue for the federal government, and letting local suits proceed would let states effectively regulate energy production everywhere.
