The Labor Department says employers added 29,000 jobs in September, well below economists' forecasts, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%. July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000 jobs. Average wages were up 3% from a year earlier, the smallest gain since May 2021, according to the AP.

Police allege they planned to target the Jewish community in the Manchester area ahead of Yom Kippur and say the men were in contact with an overseas third party who may be in Iran. Congo's health ministry says 4,018 people have died among 8,300 confirmed cases in the Ebola outbreak, which the AP describes as the fastest-growing on record. A treatment center near Bunia in Ituri province burned down this week, and the U.N. says that makes halting the outbreak even harder. Unpaid health workers have also protested.
